Prime Location, Endless Convenience

Coined the “Gateway to the Panhandle,” Childress, the county seat of Childress County, spans roughly eight miles and sits at the junction of U.S. highways 287, 83 and 62, attracting an estimated 17,000 autos each day.

An economically progressive center of commerce, Childress offers a healthy mix of retail business, service industries, governmental agencies and entertainment, while maintaining a smalltown atmosphere with a 2020 census population of 5,737 people.

With over 25 restaurants, cafés, bars and food trucks to chose from, Childress offers Thai, Chinese, Mexican and American cuisine, as well as Texas-style barbecue and fresh-roasted coffee, and boasts over 50 retail businesses and two shopping centers.

Childress, which also claims agricultural incomes in cotton, wheat, peanuts, hay, sorghum and beef cattle, is comprised of rolling prairies, making it popular among quail, turkey, deer, dove and wild boar hunters, as well as bass fishers, thanks to Baylor Lake, which is located roughly 10 miles northwest of the city limits.

A former shipping hub for the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway, Childress is home to historic Engine 501, one of five Class F-3-A Pacific type locomotives built in 1910 by Baldwin Locomotive Works, as well as the 1937 Palace Theater, a restoration project geared by the Childress Theatre Company.

Childress is also home to Fair Park, which offers picnicking facilities, walking trails, playground equipment, disc golf, a swimming pool, a lake, city auditorium and two open-air facilities – Fair Park Pavilion and The Rotary Bowl; Childress ATV Park, which offers red-dirt, off-road trails and track; Childress County Heritage Museum, which offers a host of ever-changing display, including cattle, cotton and the railroad; Stoney Ridge Golf Course, which offers 18 holes and a tasty on-site bistro, Grill on the Green; and Mashburn Event Center and Arena, which offers venue rentals and weekend entertainment, including rodeos, dances and more.
